Perhaps this should be the first commandment of entrepreneurship but it certainly bears repeating…
BUY YOUR NAME, darn it!
Seriously, it’s the 21st Century and you haven’t bought your name’s URL?
If you are sincere about growing your business, you have to acknowledge that personal branding is a huge piece of online marketing. You are your business. So why haven’t you assumed that yourname.com is going to come in handy?! (Need I say Carly Fiorina, everyone?)
While this may seem like a no brainer, in the last month I have spoken with three entrepreneurs who are running solid businesses and growing them well. They own websites, they are building their lists, they are crafting social media profiles… yet they don’t own the URL of their own name.
Seriously? It cost $10 a year at NameCheap to claim a .com – that’s a pittance! You’ll drop more than that at Starbucks in the next 48 hours.
Now, I’m not saying that your business’ online presence needs to be using your personal name. Obviously, a healthy brand can develop under many names. I AM saying that you should stop assuming that the URL of your personal name isn’t something that you want to own and protect. There is no way to anticipate what the future holds, but better to be safe than sorry.
So my advice? Right now, do it, spend the $10 and own your name. No more excuses.
